Our Stories
The people that live, work and volunteer at Mawita'mk are at the heart of our community. Here are some of their stories...
LOLIE GOULD
Lolie's smile and personality are as bright and welcoming as his hand painted bird houses. Here, he shares a bit of his history and how the Mawaita'mk Society helped him recover and grow into who he is today.
WILLIAM NICHOLAS
William Nicholas was part of the "Sixties Scoop". Being taken from his family and community and moved from home to home took its toll on his physical, emotional and spiritual development. He shares his story with us. Can you imagine what it would be like to start your journey through life like this?
MAGIT SYLLIBOY
Mawita'mk founder, Elder Magit Sylliboy was taken away from her family and community as a very young girl and brought to the Shubenacadie Residential School. Imagine having your language, your family, your community, even your doll taken away from you at such an age. Magit knows from experience that the consequences of being sent to live away from one's community are long lasting and harmful for the development of the person.
